Hello everyone.. I am new to owning Guinea Pigs, and have some questions
I have 2 male guinea pigs. I just recently got them over a website called CraigsList. I saw the pics of them on there and drove out there to get them.. The owner said that she can't take care of them anymore because she just got new kittens, and needed a new home for her piggies.
Well, when I got there, the living situation they were in wasn't that great. The home they lived in was in a room away from the rest of the house, so human contact probably didn't happen as much as it should.. they had a little kiddie pool to play in and their actual "home" was one of those starter kit cages you get in the pet stores.
I felt so bad for those 2 that I just took them. She wasn't asking any $ for them, she was just giving them away for free.
Well, so far there are no health problems with them. They are still very shy with me as far as holding them. I am not sure whether they are neutered or not, but they are brothers and have been together since birth. They get along very well together despite a couple of spats every now and then, and are very hard to tell apart. (Both are short haired and black and white colored). Almost identical looking. She never said, and I completely forgot to ask, but I am assuming by their size, they're over 1 year old.
One of them is the dominant one. The other, is very shy.
My question is mainly about their behavior. When you hold them, are they suppose to squeak or chirp a lot? I understand they have many sounds that they make, but one of them (the very shy one) makes *a lot* of noises when I hold him. And I always hold them together... they seem uncomfortable when I hold them individually.
And, how long do you think it will take them to get used to me to where they won't run away completely when I try to go and pick them up? I want them to trust me
I have had them for a week and a half or so.
Thanks for any help and advice you can give me
Sarah
