I agree on fact that Breeders should not post here and I seen there damage at first hand. Petco near my area buys from a breeder who makes hundreds which this infomation i got from a worker. These poor guinea pigs already sick and problems already before they go to petco and when they arrive at petco i seen how badly workers are to them because the whole they are a rat mentality. Before i knew anything about guineapigs i was going to buy one from Petco but when worker said this is first time picking one up and tried to pick it up from cage and he sqeezed it too hard and crushed it bones. I was devestated so badly that i now go to petshops check on there progress and if its bad report them. After reporting petco near my house this particular store always has sick guinea pigs all the time. I have a friend who works there just to get info on how things work there and ECT. She been there for 3 months and when she tried to clean the cages more often the manager says no we cant afford to keep replacing bedding. according to her theres 5 guinea pigs in a small cage u know changing bedding once every other week well not cut it. She seen how many times guineapigs are return the next day all because they are sick. for past 3 months she said 80percent of all guineapigs and other rodents come back and she planning to quit petco all because manager ordered her to put the sick ones returned in a freezer. So she refused and she has enough proof to put petco in Taunton massachusetts USA out. SO my BIG point is that breeders are responsible for everything they sell or do cause of this breeder who sells them GPS this breeder sells them nothing but sick animals and my friend finally got adress where these guinea pigs are hold. IF they all comming in sick then it must be horrible location. Manager been there and seen harsh conditions and doesnt care. SO tommarrow me and her are going there acting like we from another store and will explose this guinea pig breeder most likely a guinea pig mill and end this suffering. My point is that breeders should not come to this forum and they shouldnt breed period.

I am sorry for spelling or sorry if i offend anyone is just that after witnessing what happen at petco near my house and horrors of other petstores who get there stock from breeders and on top of that treat them even worse is just plain torture. Just so passionate about saving guinea pigs i do anything to help them I personally own only 2 guinea pigs both females. I love these animals i can't immagine seeing them getting exploited and then tortured neglected.

no one should breed unless they have done all the research and read every book and studied every website and made every precaution!

Every breeder I know knows there is no profit in raising guinea pigs except that you get to enjoy caring for them.
I am a cavy breeder but on a very small scale. I've done wayy more than enough research and have about 5 books and websites memorized!
At the same time, I rescue. I don't mean I adopt from a shelter - I can only have 6 guinea pigs - but I do what I can and when I find a guinea pig that is in big trouble I help it out (Except from pet stores - too expensive, and, as you say, it supports the selling of the same thing) For instance about mid-2008 I found three guinea pigs beneath a tree, being attacked by a hawk. We were able to capture one but the other two got away. the one we saved was healthy, her nails trimmed, young and very tame. We don't know why someone would dump them? more recently a rabbit was dumped about five feet from the same busy street. I was on a walk when I saw it, and I stopped and it came up to me so I carried her home. SHe was emaciated and pregnant and a few days after she gave birth to 4 dead babies! But she was also tame with trimmed nails... I have a feeling the same person dumped them both and I am really upset about this!!! Thank you guys for being open to responsible breeders! I'm sure we all have something to learn from eachother, even from people who are differently minded than us. I have rescued the dumped animals, and I am a breeder; so I take both sides. All I really want is to enjoy my babies, and believe me, I do not just sit around and make up theories on how to care for them! I've done my research and everything I can to care for them to the best of my abillities. I don't sell "stock". I have very few litters a year, and I do all I can to ensure the babies go to a responsible home that will be as good or better than mine. It hurts to turn down someone when you need to sell a pig, but it's better than giving it to someon who won't so the research. It seems funny to look at shelters and breeders of guinea pigs - both love the animals but mostly are unwilling to learn from eachother or respect eachother. this is very frustrating for breeders as well but it's just as unfair to say that all guinea pig breeding is evil as to say all rescues are rude and exclusive. |
